Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), also called Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), is the practice of making your content easy for AI systems — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI Overviews — to find, understand, trust and cite. It does not replace SEO; it extends it. The foundations are the same, but the reward shifts from a ranked link to being quoted inside an answer.
Traditional search returns ten links and lets the user choose. Answer engines synthesize one response and cite a handful of sources. That changes the goal: you are no longer only competing for position, you are competing to be the passage a model extracts and attributes. Winning that requires clear, self-contained, verifiable statements — not keyword density.
Models favor passages that state a direct, extractable answer up front, then support it. Lead each page and each major section with a clean definition or conclusion, then expand. Burying the answer under three paragraphs of throat-clearing makes your content harder to quote than a competitor who leads with it.

Many AI crawlers do not execute a full browser session. Content that only appears after JavaScript runs may be invisible to them. Server-render or statically generate anything you want cited, and confirm it exists in view-source. This is the same discipline as SEO for AI-built sites.
Answer engines weigh consensus. Being referenced consistently across reputable third-party sites, directories and communities raises the probability of citation. This is classic digital PR reframed: you are building the corroborating evidence a model uses to decide whom to trust.
Decide which AI crawlers may access your content and express it in robots.txt. Blocking every AI bot removes you from answer engines entirely; allowing them is a prerequisite for citation. An llms.txt file can additionally provide a curated map of your most important pages.
You cannot rank-track a synthesized answer the old way. Instead: periodically ask the major assistants your target questions and record whether you are mentioned or cited; watch referral traffic from AI products in analytics; and track branded query growth, which often rises as AI mentions increase. GEO rewards the same thing great design does: clarity and substance over decoration. If your page is genuinely the best, self-contained answer to a real question, both people and models have a reason to choose it.
